Megaupload, among the largest file-sharing sites, is closed for copyright infringement!

Federal prosecutors in Virginia have closed one of the largest sites in the world of file sharing, Megaupload.com . Its founder was  accused of violation of piracy and copyright infringement.

MCLEAN, Va. (AP) - Federal prosecutors have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites,  Megaupload.com , and charged with violating ITS founder and others piracy laws.
The indictment accuses the company of copyright holders costing more than $ 500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after websites shut down in protest of two congressional proposals Intended to thwart the piracy of copyrighted movies and online TV programs.

The indictment says at one point, Megaupload was the 13th Most Popular website in the world.
This action is one of the largest copyright infringement cases ever brought by the United States and is aimed directly using file hosting sites as a means for distributing illegal material or covered by copyright.
The owners and the two companies - Megaupload Limited and Limited Vestor - were indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia January 5, 2012, on charges of racketeering, copyright infringement, money laundering, copyright infringement .  For these crimes there is a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison depending on the accusation that will be recognized by the judges.
The prosecution argues that the criminal enterprise is led by Kim Dotcom aka Kim Schmitz Jim Vestor Tim and Kim, 37, a resident of Hong Kong and New Zealand. This is one of the largest cases of closure of file hosting sites on the web which could be followed by wheel 4shared, rapidshare and many others.
