Using Safari 5 + it is possible for a Java applet within a web page in a new window.
Open a website where a java applet is present, an example is the Rubik Cube on the following web page:

Use the key combination CMD ⌘ + ⇧ Shift and drag the Java applet from the Safari window. Automatically, a new Java window open containing the selected java applet. This can be a useful option if you certain information such as football results in a java applet to monitor
