The large 4.7-inch smartphone from HTC features an excellent interface and a powerful processor. A device to do everything, but does it really?
The promise
The two new stars of HTC are S and One X One, a couple surprising that caused a sensation when it appeared in the last MWC 2012 in Barcelona. The X One focuses on the power, by arming the quad-core processor nVidia Tegra 3 signed. With 32 GB of internal memory, this smartphone looks like a real video game platform. It also offers an environment in Android 4.0.3, Ice Cream Sandwich said, and especially the overlay Sense 4.0. We therefore wanted to know if the device was its many promises.
Reality
The X One particularly impressed by its smoothness and lightness: only 9 mm thick for 130 g. If it holds very well in hand, it is too wide to effectively use only one hand. The casing of the device is removable. It is therefore difficult or impossible to change its battery. The screen is very well integrated into the smartphone in a dominant plastics that break with the nobility of its design and assembly. In terms of finish, despite everything, the One X remains one of the most polished smarpthones Android Market.
Autonomy record voice
The One X was very uneven in our tests of independence. Recall that its Tegra chip 3 is composed of four powerful cores supported by a fifth less swift, but very little energy and intended to take over when the phone is in standby. So, in a voice conversation (off screen), this fifth heart allows the camera to take almost 19 hours on battery, a record. In video playback, however, when the four main cores are activated to decode a file in 720p, the X One lasted only 4 h, a bad result. In web browsing, it is better (6 h), but remains in the low average of modern smartphones. In a video game in 3D Shadowgun grown like the One X will not take more than 2 h 30 min, which is not bad.
HTC Sense: always the best environment for Android
With the design of its smartphones, the main value added manufacturer HTC is its interface Sense. The latest version 4.0 totally transforms the original interface system Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3). Again, this is a real achievement. The overlay is full of options and ergonomic tips. It also incorporates the major social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc..) And high-quality widgets. Everything is very fluid and responsive, and lined with beautiful 3D animations. Menus very dark Android 4.0 have all been touched in white, and are, hence, much more user friendly. The multitasking menu toggle between programs has been completely reworked by HTC and now offers a smooth and incredibly effective. In short, in every sense, Sense interface was already the most careful of Android smartphones, and still is.
Potential for games to prove
With games, the outcome of our tests is generally mixed. Certainly, the Tegra chip offers 3 great potential power. But we observed some small saccades in games like GTA 3, embarrassing for the player. The same game, with the same level of detail, was much more fluid on Galaxy rating. Small delays found in games are mostly due to data loads, and should be mitigated by some optimization of the system by HTC. Updates are therefore desirable.
While Nvidia has meant that developers improve graphical rendering of their video games for the Tegra chip 3. But they do pay version "THD" optimized for the chip from Nvidia. If you have already purchased a title like Shadowgun will require the purchase price to acquire the same version THD, we can use with the Tegra platform 3. If these games are actually pretty much, this business practice is, in our view, unacceptable.
Note that multimedia, the X One reads all formats of audio and video files except DivX 3. The camera devours the 1080p with ease, no complaints on that side.

Beautiful photos
The One X has a very powerful photo sensor. Our tests are clear: it is one of the best photographers in the industry Android, with the Samsung S2 Galaxy and S Sony Xperia. It remains just below the quality offered by the iPhone 4S, whose record is more balanced in our opinion. HTC also offers an HDR very powerful, much more marked than that of the iPhone. This is too strong for HDR images properly informed, but it becomes much more efficient than that of the iPhone to correct against big-day.
The LCD displays the X One definition is very high (1280 pixels by 720) and a consistent brightness (495 cd / m²). He maintains an adequate contrast ratio (over 1237:1) and displays the correct color, even if their record tends to pull the yellow.

Powerful but boiling
The One X is not perfect. We identified many small bugs minimal interface that must be corrected. But the biggest handicap of the smartphone is its temperature, which can be very high: up to 49 degrees behind the laptop after 10 minutes of play in 3D when plugged in charging. It is way too! From our observations, the Tegra processor 3 runs very little to 1.5 GHz. He spends most of his time at 340 MHz, 1000 MHz and 1400 MHz, even in games.
Another serious handicap: the One X does not accept MicroSD card. It will therefore be satisfied with its 32 GB internal memory (27.35 GB actually available). The new version of Sense, however, offers an online backup of 25 GB .. DropBox unfortunately limited to 24 months available. Then it will subscribe!

The verdict
The HTC smartphone One X finally impresses mainly by its design and its interface very successful. Autonomy in communication record proves the effectiveness of the Tegra chip 3 when his fifth heart uses low power. But in 3D, in games, this platform has yet to prove much, and receive many optimizations from HTC. The One X combines several small flaws that ultimately lost him his fifth star. Overall, it remains one of the best smartphones on the market.
