What to choose instead of Windows 8: The five alternatives

While the OEM-partners and Microsoft fans trying to Windows 8 on the PC, it's time to consider alternatives, writes PCWeek.

I am working on Windows 8 months. But even after the publication of Release Candidate for application developers, I still find Windows 8 is the worst version of Windows at the moment. Worse than Vista, worse than Windows Millennium Edition (Me). And only for one reason better than Windows Bob, because Bob was just a user interface for Windows 95 and NT, but not the operating system.

Even some of the most ardent fans cease to admire Microsoft Windows 8.

OEM-manufacturers are not welcome competition from tablet Microsoft Surface (the only good use of Windows 8 Metro). They lack the motivation to actively promote Windows 8 among its customers. Moreover, they (potentially) be forced to provide support to millions of customers who are trying to understand the interface of Metro and is eat a tiny margin.

Meanwhile, representatives of independent software vendors (Independent Software Vendors, or ISVs), such as co-founder and manager of Valve Gabe Newell, believe that Windows 8 will be a "disaster in the PC world." He is not only representative of ISV, with prejudice related to Windows 8. Rob Pardo, vice president of Blizzard, which develops hugely game World of Warcraft, said that Windows 8 "for Blizzard is not amazing."

She does not like many users do not like the producers do not like the developers. Windows 8 will die before publication. How to do without Windows 8 if it begins to fill store shelves in the coming months?

Option 1: Move to Mac

Want to know a little secret of many Windows-developers? The conferences on software that I have visited over the past few months, many of them were laptops Apple. And they worked on OS X, not Windows. Windows is running in virtual machines.

First of all, I have a user desktop Linux, but using all major desktop operating systems and I must say that the Mountain Lion, the newest operating system is Apple, looks and works very well. On my MacBook Pro and Mac mini, it works faster than previous versions and I like the new features of the OS. I particularly like the AirPlay Mirroring on the latest models of Mac, Apple TV console has turned my HD TV into a computer screen.

Option 2: Go to the Linux desktop

Over the years I have been saying - Linux-desktop works fine. It is much safer than ever to Windows, is more stable in loading. I will not be repeated. Let me just say that Mint 13 is an excellent desktop Linux, where all XP users will feel right at home. Ubuntu Unity can use all almost everything. I note that Valve porting Steam gaming platform onto the desktop Linux.

Finally, many small suppliers can buy a PC preloaded with Linux. For Linux-desktops back and Dell. The company has just released a powerful laptop with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and is preparing to release a laptop with Ubuntu developers.

Option 3: Stay on Windows 7 or XP

ZDNet columnist Ed Bott notes that you can simply continue to use Windows 7. If you can not do without Windows, but nervous at the sight of Windows 8, when buying a new PC requires Windows 7 and tell your provider that you do not want to see Windows 8.

If Microsoft gets enough buyers resistance, Windows 8 (as previously and Vista) back for revision and the previous operating systems XP and Windows 7 will have a new chance.

In any case, a PC with Windows 7 will be sold for at least two years, and the support will continue until 2020. Hell, even XP SP3 will be supported until April 8, 2014. If you really like Windows, you can use it for years instead of the haphazard Windows 8.

Option 4: Cloud Computing

In cloud computing Google has moved furthest with its Chrome OS and Chromebook. (Chrome OS consists of a thin layer of Linux and a web browser Google Chrome.)

Before you dismiss the idea of cloud desktop because it needs to connect to the Internet for access to many features, keep in mind, many go that way. Mountain Lion intensive iCloud, Microsoft Office 2013 is highly dependent on cloud distributions of Linux, such as Peppermint, rely on a cloud.

The PC is a personal cloud computer for which the operating system irrelevant.

Option 5: Time of Tablets

PC obsolete? I do not think so, but the plates are increasingly being replaced by PCs. It is not limited to iPad. New Android-plates, particularly Nexus 7, rapidly gaining popularity. Of course, Microsoft also wants to get into this market with Windows 8, Windows RT (Windows 8 processors ARM) and the upcoming Tablet Surface. Personally, I doubt that Windows 8 will work on the plates is more alive than on the PC.

It's not that Windows 8 Metro does not work on the tablets - I found that works. But Apple already owns the premium segment, maintains a presence in the medium price range and continues to sell the iPad 2, Android firmly entrenched in inexpensive plates. I do not see any place in the market for a tablet with Windows 8.

If the price of Tablet Surface ranges from $ 1,000 for a model with Windows 8 for x86 up to 600 dollars for a version of Windows RT, in my opinion, Surface repeat the fate of Microsoft Bob.
