Samsung announces first 16GB DDR4 Memory Module for Server Systems

Through a press release, Samsung officially announced the first module of DDR4 memory intended for high density server systems. We speak of course of a RDIMM module, assembled with chips built with 30 nanometer manufacturing process and a maximum capacity of 16 GB .

Wanhoon Hong , Executive Vice President of Memory Division, Samsung, said:

"With the launch of these new high density modules DDR4, Samsung supports the development of the next generation of IT Systems High Performance Green. Simultaneously with the launch of new memories for Server Systems, the company works to the introduction of new products with chips to 20 nanometers. "

DDR4 modules will be available in 8GB and cuts will reduce energy consumption by about 40% compared to the "old" DDR3. The voltage I / O it goes from 1.35 to 1.20 volts and within a year, says the company always, we will also increase the operating frequencies up to nearly double the current 1600 MHz base frequency of the DDR3.

Micron announced the creation of its first DDR4 memory module

Company Micron Technology announced the creation of its first "fully functional" memory DRAM DDR4. The manufacturer has begun shipping samples of study and received feedback from major customers, which should help the rapid introduction of new products in 2013.
It is expected that the markets for corporate servers and micro-servers will benefit from the first DDR4. Application of the new memory is also expected in the ultra-thin clients and tablets.
The modules, developed in cooperation with Nanya, x8-density components are used 4Gb, made on 30-nanometer technology. Modules have opened a family in which the model will eventually RDIMM, LRDIMM, 3DS, SODIMM and UDIMM (including, with support for ECC). In addition, the planned release of components x8, x16 and x32, designed for mounting on printed circuit board system. The first time, will produce products that supports 2400 MT / s, later - 3200 MT / s, maximum speed, standardized JEDEC.
Hoping for a speedy exit DDR4 final specification , expected to close by mid-year, Micron plans to begin mass production of modules in the fourth quarter of this year.
Micron - not the first company, announced the creation of memory DDR4. First in the industry on the issue DDR4 memory, Samsung announced in January last year. In April of that year, his success in this area the company said Hynix .

Intel Haswell-EX and DDR4 RAM in 2014

In 2014 the market will see the debut of the new server platform, Intel Hasweel-EX , a solution that provides up to 16 processor cores and DDR4 RAM. As for the consumer market, however, DDR4 memories will come a year later with the debut of 22-nanometer processors Hasweel, CPU and replaces the upcoming Ivy Bridge. In the future a bit 'farther see Broadwell from 14 nm processors compatible with socket LGA 1150 (as Hasweel and the rest).
But to see a spreading "capillary" Memoirs of DDR4 we should probably wait until 2015 with 14-nanometer processors Skylake. But what difference there is between DDR3 and DDR4?DDR4 memories consume much less, from 1.5 V to 1.2 V for DDR3 Furthermore, the present DDR4 greater protection and better error recovery.
