Desktop operating system OS X 10.8, code-named passing Mountain Lion, is likely to be the last, which was code-name of the cat family.
It is known that each platform's desktop Apple gets the "cat" names: Cheetah (Cheetah), Puma (Puma), Jaguar (Jaguar), Panther (Panther), Tiger (Tiger), Leopard (Leopard), Snow Leopard (Snow Leopard), Leo (Lion).
The forthcoming version of OS X 10.8 is called the Mountain lion or cougar (Mountain Lion), demonstrating not only a rare term, but the fact that this animal belongs rather to the nature of cougars, a lion that easily wins.
There is an obvious problem: Apple has already used more or less suitable names for their desktop platforms. What happens next is not clear yet, because the names are parsed rivals: for example, trot called a pocket console, Atari, and Ocelot called one of the releases of Ubuntu.
By the way, Google in this regard came more efficient - its mobile operating system follows the tradition of naming the sweet treats. Each edition of the Android operating system for smartphones and tablet gets its own name on the dessert, of which manifested in excess. Names are assigned in alphabetical order. For example, the latest version of the Android 4.0 is called Ice Cream Sandwich ("Sandwich ice cream"), and the assembly is known as 3.0 Honeycomb ("Honeycomb").
Intel's tradition calls its development on the basis of integrated circuits for the names of cities, rivers and mountains, located near the factory of the company, such as Sandy Bridge or Xeon.
