The new USB standard will transmit up to 100 watts of power

Group USB 3.0 Promoter Group, which includes Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft, Renesas, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments, adopted specification USB Power Delivery. This technology will make possible the transfer of the USB cable up to 100 watts of power (current capacity of USB 3.0 is limited to 900 mA current, which, at a voltage of 5 V, gives a maximum power of 4.5 W). This will allow to connect to the USB port monitors, printers, external storage size of 3.5 inches and much more. The realization of these opportunities will require special cables that can withstand the increased current.
An interesting and very useful feature of the new technology lies in the fact that the "direction" of the charge can be changed. For example, to your laptop via a USB cable connected to an external battery. While the laptop is charging from the mains and the battery is charging. If you turn off your mobile PC from the charger, you can switch the "direction" of the charge and the external battery will give energy notebook.

It also remain compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0. Security will be responsible for the electronics. It will limit the power of using the old cables or connectors on one side. This does not allow to melt the old cable to connect compatible devices. Also, you can not worry about the device with low power consumption, the new cable connected to the new terminal.
As always, the promotion of such standards on the market is fairly slow, as it requires implementation in various areas of production. This new cables, connectors and updated, and support from the chipset. Therefore, when the direct component can be seen to support the new technology on the market, it is not known.  Source: USB 3.0 Promoter Group
